Summary from: Nov. 17, 2009
Katie Stiel the Campaign Coordinator introduced the campaign to the community.
Thank you to the residents that attended.
Environment Hamilton, led by Executive Director Lynda Lukasik is a local nongovernment,
not for profit organization that works with local residents dealing with
environmental issues using the Environmental Bill of Rights. This campaign is a project
of theirs to bring communities together to discuss environmental impacts and bring these
concerns back to the industry and influence positive change in their environmental
performance.
There are several industries in the Hamilton area that compromise the air we breathe.
This first campaign is focused on ArcelorMittal Dofasco.
They are currently seeking a Comprehensive Certificate of Approval from the Ministry of
the Environment to run their facility and Alternate Standards for emissions under
Environmental Air Regulation 419/05 that came into legislation in 2005. It imposes
new, lower air emission standards on industrial facilities in Ontario, including
ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Under s. 32 of that regulation, a facility that is not able to
meet the standards may apply for an alternative site-specific air standard and time
to come into compliance for certain compounds they emit into the air we breathe as a
result of the manufacturing process. This is long and costly for the industry and the
application includes their commitment to an action plan that implements technology
based improvements to their facility to reduce emissions.
However, their emissions of toxic compounds will continue to exceed levels that are
considered to be protective of human health and the environment for the length of
time granted by the Ministry of the Environment. Is the Action Plan good enough?
When will the “accidental or unexpected emissions” that impact on our lives be reduced
to the point of tolerance? They have committed to improve and we need to tell them we
deserve and expect it.
Residents can stand up and hold them to account. This campaign provides an organized
way for this and other communities to come together as one strong voice and bring a
message to ArcelorMittal Dofasco to be a Good Neighbour.
Many areas of Hamilton have been impacted far too long and many people have
admirably lent their voices to provoke change in the past. The Good Neighbour
Campaign provides all residents with a way to collectively and proactively put open and
effective pressure on this company to invest in a “healthy community’ through improved
environmental performance.
