Reducing Dofasco emissions topic of MOE meeting

Concerned Hamilton residents will meet tonight with representatives from the Ministry of the Environment to discuss ArcelorMittal Dofasco's plans to meet alternative air-quality standards.

The company could not meet the stringent emission standards the ministry introduced to industrial facilities in 2005 and implemented this year, so it applied last year to attain an alteration to the standard process.

The ministry allows for the fact some facilities need more time to make adjustments to meet new standards. It has proposed to approve Dofasco's application, but gives the public until June 6 for input. Dofasco is spending more than $16 million on its Blue Skies Air Quality Action Plan that aims for a 27 per cent reduction in benzo (a) pyrene, or BaP, an 82 per cent reduction in benzene, a 20 per cent reduction in total reduced sulphur and a 4 per cent reduction in total suspended particulate, or dust.

The meeting, hosted by ministry representatives, will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall Hamilton Branch on Barton Street East.

Katie Stiel, Environment Hamilton's Good Neighbour Campaign co-ordinator, said it was not enough for Dofasco to meet alternative standards. "We realize the company can do better ... we plan on asking hard-hitting questions to the ministry, ask them why they allow this to go on," Stiel said yesterday, adding their main concern was the timeline around cancer-causing agents such as benzene and BaP.

The campaign will present letters and postcards from concerned residents collected over the last couple months to the ministry.

Ministry representative Jennifer Hall said tonight will be an "open house" format, allowing the public to ask their staffers questions.

Dofasco representatives were not available for comment.
