The City of Hamilton will commemorate the sinking of two United States Navy schooners in Lake Ontario during the War of 1812 at a public ceremony Sunday, 11 a.m. at the Hamilton and Scourge Naval Memorial Garden in Confederation Park.

Fifty-three American sailors were lost during the sinking of the Hamilton and Scourge in the early morning hours of Aug. 8, 1813 during a sudden squall.

The Hamilton and Scourge survive intact in about 90 metres of water at the bottom of Lake Ontario, 11 kilometres north of Port Dalhousie.

The site is a designated National Historic Site and a designated underwater archeological site requiring special protection under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The Hamilton and the Scourge were originally constructed as merchant schooners, but both were pressed into service by the Americans and modified for military purposes at the outbreak of the War of 1812.

The City of Hamilton owns the vessels and is responsible for their stewardship and long-term management.
