I am a little late on this story, a minor fire at Bell Cairn last Wednesday.

From Councillor Collins Office;
Multiple Alarm Fire – 467 Beach Blvd. – Message from Hamilton Fire Department
The alarm was dispatched at approximately 12:05 hrs. Fire crews arriving on the scene reported smoke conditions in the roof of the building and because of the size of this building an upgrade to a multiple alarm was requested. Fire crews found that roofing contractors had been on the roof conducting hot work around a roof top HVAC unit and this ignited the combustible roof deck. This building was formerly an elementary school Bell Carin which was renovated to accommodate the current occupant. Part of the original renovation was the construction of a new roof over the existing roof. This created a problem for firefighters as the fire was located between the two roofs therefore sections of the roof deck had to be cut and removed to extinguish the fire. Crews worked quickly and were able to have a successful knock down with estimated damages at $150,000 and there were no reported injuries to the public or firefighters.
This building is owned and occupied by Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services- Ontario Correctional Services College where they run the Correctional Officer Training and Assessment (COTA) program which is an eight-week training and assessment program. The building also has a dormitory where people attending the 8 week course can also reside and on this day they had approximately 40 staff and 60 students.
