Do you worry about the air quality in your community? Would you like to see more trees in your neighbourhood?
Join Environment Hamilton (EH) and Hamilton Naturalists' Club (HNC) on Saturday, April 16 from 10:00am to 12:00pm for an interpretive walking tour of the Hamilton Beach Community that will highlight the relationship between urban trees and air quality. We'll be meeting in the parking lot at the Lakeland Centre - 180 Van Wagner's Beach Road. You will learn about local sources of air particulate pollution and how trees are providing a buffer from that pollution. We'll also look at areas that might benefit from more trees. This is part of the new Trees Please: Green Solutions to Air Pollution project which is training volunteers to monitor local air quality and to assess tree health in the neighbourhood. This information will be used to create a tree-planting strategy for the neighbourhood that prioritizes tree planting in locations that lack trees and have poor air quality. We'll then put that strategy into action - enlisting community volunteers to help us to grow, plant and maintain trees and improve local air quality in the process. Join us to learn about how you can be involved in this exciting new project!

A worthwhile project, but I find this a bit ironic after Hydro One came through and clear cut the trees on the strip :(
I consider the plant a reaction to Hydro One's crimes to the Beach, they have zero thought to the residents and do as they want. I tried to stop the first cut many years ago and was basically told "too bad, we are going to do it anyway". I attended the last Beach meeting where this project was discussed and the planting will be more selective on the locations, therefore Hydro One won't have the easement to get at these new ones. Hopefully they never come back.

This message was sent in by Juby Lee from Environment Hamilton;

I'm working (alongside Andrew from the Hamilton Naturalists Club) on the Trees Please project. We have set our tree inventorying dates for May for the Beach Strip area and we were hoping you could spread the word.

We are looking for volunteers to help collect information about trees in the 'hood and input it into Open Tree Map.
A tree inventory gives us a snapshot of the kinds of trees and other data points for the tree canopy in a certain area. We are excited about using Open Tree Map b/c it will calculate a dollar value to each tree in terms of Greenhouse gas and the amount of CO2 the tree has absorbed as well as other values, ie water and energy benefits.

As well, we are looking for volunteers to collect levels of Particulate Matter using our air monitors.
Coupling the tree inventorying and air monitoring, we want to identify tree planting locations and get more trees into the ground.
If you can help us spread the word for our May inventorying dates, we would appreciate that.
I have attached the PDF and JPEG versions of the poster.
If you have any questions, we (Andrew and I) can be reached via email or by calling Environment Hamilton's # at: 905-549-0900.

I wanted to pass on our June dates for tree inventorying.
As well, if anyone is interested in collecting some air quality information, we can lend air monitors out to people and they can see what the levels of particulate matter are in the area. Folks can email treespleasehamilton@gmail.com or call 905-549-0900.

Here are our dates for the tree inventorying:

Plant thousands more trees in east Hamilton: councillors

Jun 02, 2016
Hamilton Spectator
By Matthew Van Dongen

The city is looking at planting thousands of extra trees in east Hamilton wards plagued by pollution and forest loss.

Two councillors are pitching separate tree canopy-boosting efforts that combined would beef up the city's annual $1.3 million planting budget by an extra $800,000.

Sam Merulla has pitched using nearly $400,000 in industrial air pollution fines to plant trees in wards 3, 4 and 5, with a grants recommendation going to council next week. Chad Collins has a motion pending to use $400,000 in area rating and reserve cash to replace trees lost to contentious hydro corridor cutting along the Red Hill Valley and beach strip.

"I think it's worthwhile, because at this point we're just losing mature trees in so many places, for so many reasons," said Collins, who has been inundated with complaints from residents outraged by Hydro One's decision to axe hundreds of trees as part of an unpopular maintenance plan for its local power tower corridors.

It looks worse to residents, he added, because the city is simultaneously cutting down dead, dying and at-risk ash trees in parks and public areas because of an invasive beetle, the Emerald Ash Borer.

The $390,000 in pollution fines levied against steelmaker ArcelorMittal Dofasco in 2014, meanwhile, were originally earmarked for small grant requests from community air quality projects in the industrial east end.

But Merulla said the "cumbersome bureaucracy" of the proposed grant program had so far prevented any cash from being handed out a year later. "I saw this as a simpler way to attack the pollution problem; something we can do now," he said.

The city's annual $1.3 million planting budget typically adds 5,000 to 8,000 trees to streets and parks, plus replacements for ash axed as part of the invasive beetle battle.

The number of additional trees planted for the proposed $800,000 is expected to be in the thousands – but the actual number could vary widely depending on size, species and whether the cash is also used for year-long watering efforts.

More details to come

We have confirmed two plantings happening in the Beach Strip.

1) Please share
Sat April 28th, 2018 at 10am
Tree Planting at Windermere Basin
This is in partnership with the City / Forestry division. The goal is to continue the tree planting from 2017.
Please bring shovel. It's family friendly.

2) Sharing is not needed
Thursday May 10th, 2018 at 9am(ish)
Planting more tall grasses along the Beach Strip.
Again a partnership with the City.
The location and maybe the timing is still being confirmed but we are 98% sure of the details.
We have 4500+ plants to plant. And have a real estate company who is making this planting their volunteer day, they have a workforce of approx 80-100 people. Plus we have Aviva insurance employees as well.
If your team wants to come and help, that is great BUT this planting is more for your information. With these two companies, we might be at volunteer capacity. Which is great! I don't think we have ever had 100 volunteers for one planting before.

Thanks everyone,
Have a great long weekend :)
Juby
