Lift Bridge Closures

The City of Hamilton has received notice from Federal Government representatives that maintenance activities will temporarily close the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge. Please note the information below. As always, please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions you might have.


Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) wishes to advise motorists, pedestrians and cyclists of nightly closures on the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, located in Hamilton, Ontario.

The bridge is scheduled to be closed to all road and pedestrian traffic nightly from Monday June 20 until Saturday, June 25, 2016, from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Rush hour traffic will not be affected.

Marine traffic will not be affected.

These closures are required as part of the project to replace the bridge’s controls, drives and cables. This schedule may change due to weather conditions or logistical requirements.

Short term closures of the bridge or individual lanes will continue to occur periodically during the project. PSPC will publish notifications regarding upcoming closures, restrictions and any changes in schedule.

Safety is a top priority for PSPC during this project. The replacement of key components of the bridge’s lift system will extend its serviceable life, meeting the needs of both marine and vehicular traffic in the area.

A Change of Time

Burlington Lift Bridge (Closed to Road Traffic)
Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) wishes to advise motorists, pedestrians and cyclists of an update to the nightly closures on the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, located in Hamilton, Ontario.

The bridge is scheduled to be closed to all road and pedestrian traffic nightly from Monday June 20 until Saturday, June 25, 2016, from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., this has changed from the previous notice which stated a 7:00 p.m. start time.

Marine traffic will not be affected.

These closures are required as part of the project to replace the bridge's controls, drives and cables. This schedule may change due to weather conditions or logistical requirements.

Today the City of Hamilton received the following notice from the Government of Canada.

Burlington Canal Lift Bridge - daytime sidewalk closures
For immediate release
HAMILTON, Ontario, June 22, 2016 – Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) wishes to advise pedestrians and cyclists of restricted access to the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge from July 4 to 29, 2016.
During these dates, the following restrictions will be in place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.:
• from July 4 to 29, the north and south pedestrian underpasses will be closed;
• from July 4 to 15, access to the east (lakeside) part of the Waterfront Trail will be closed;
• from July 18 to 29, access to the west (bayside) part of the Waterfront Trail will be closed; and
• from July 18 to 29, the west (bayside) bridge sidewalk will be closed.
The bridge will remain open to pedestrian and cyclist traffic on weekends and weekdays after 5 p.m.
This schedule may change due to weather conditions or logistical requirements. PSPC will publish notices regarding any changes in schedule.

BURLINGTON CANAL LIFT BRIDGE OVERNIGHT CLOSURES - HAMILTON, Ontario.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) wishes to advise all users of closures on the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge from November 28 to December 3, 2016.
The bridge is scheduled to be closed overnight to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the following periods:

• from Monday, November 28, at 8 pm to Tuesday, November 29, at 5 am

• from Tuesday, November 29, at 8 pm to Wednesday, November 30, at 5 am

• from Wednesday, November 30, at 8 pm to Thursday, December 1, at 5 am

• from Thursday, December 1, at 8 pm to Friday, December 2, at 5 am

• from Friday, December 2, at 8 pm to Saturday, December 3, at 5 am

Please note that rush hour and marine traffic will not be affected.
