Thousands of people turned out on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Burlington in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record, but their efforts fell short.

The Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation event at Spencer Smith Park attracted 2,334 people, well short of the 3,374 that were needed to set a new record. Organizers were prepared to have as many as 4,000 take part.

The hospital was trying to set the Guinness record for the largest human letter — in the shape of the letter ‘J’, for Joseph Brant — to show support for the nearby hospital that is now under renovation.

The current record is held by Queen’s University, which formed a ‘Q’ with 3,373 people on Sept. 6 of this year.
