This plume travel across the south end of the Beach around 3:10 pm, I was leaving the store and notice the cloud at the end and drove to it. It smelled like varsol.

At least four people have been hospitalized after the release after a yellow-green "plume" from an industrial business in the east end near Pier 24.

A Hamilton emergency medical services official said "multiple" patients have been transported to various area hospitals as a result of a workplace incident. An incident command post was set up around 4 p.m.

Police Staff Sgt. Dave Pidgeon said four or five people were "affected" by the smoke, but the extent of any injuries was not immediately clear.

Pidgeon said the plume was reported at 725 Strathearne Ave. N., the address for Ruetgers Canada, a coal tar products manufacturer.

The smoke initially blew across Nikola Tesla Boulevard, prompting police to block pedestrians from venturing closer to the intersection of the boulevard and Strathearne Avenue around 3:30 p.m.

Firefighters were conducting air tests and probing the source of the smoke Tuesday afternoon. Pidgeon said windy conditions means the smoke was expected to dissipate quickly.

More to come.
