The Beach Strip
#1
This is a call to McAnulty and Beach Strip residents to participate in a photo project about living near the steel industry. The aim of the project is to produce a photo exhibition that gives a voice to residents’ concerns about the environment in their neighbourhoods, and draws the attention of all Hamiltonians to the conditions that North-enders contend with everyday.
Who: The North Endis a community art project by artist Bryce Kanbara and photographer Jim Chambers with the support of Environment Hamilton and funding assistance from the Ontario Arts Council, orgainzedby Centre 3.

What: A one-time photo shoot of up to 15 households from McAnulty and Beach Strip neighbourhoods.

When: March, April, June, 2013.

How: a) Arrangements will be made for Bryce and Jim to photograph the family/residents in front of their homes. Family participants will receive a copy of the photograph.
b) As an additional part of the project, all residents are encouraged to take and contribute outdoor photos of their own homes and surroundings. A selection of these will be included in the exhibition. Jim Chambers will offer free 40 minute “picture-taking basics” workshops at Hamilton Labour Council, and the Beach Strip Neighbourhood Association to provide simple, point-and-shoot tips.
Where: The photo exhibition will be presented at Centre 3 Print & Media Arts, 173 James St. North in July, and other public venues -- such as community centres in other parts of town.

Why: The purpose of the project is to invigorate public discussion about the relationship of Hamiltonians and the steel industry. It will stimulate fresh perceptions, insights and ways of engaging with environmental issues and with one another.
