Rohmer's family moved to the beach strip, and the east end. His father played two years as a halfback for the Hamilton Tigers, and owned several gas stations, where his son started working as an 11-year-old.
As a boy Rohmer was fascinated by airplanes and dreamed of becoming a pilot.
