Sunset ceremony for sunken War of 1812 schooners
The public is invited to a sunset ceremony at Hamilton & Scourge Naval Memorial Garden at Confederation Park, 585 Van Wagners Beach Rd., on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m., near Edgewater Pavillion, to commemorate the sinking of two United States navy War of 1812 schooners in Lake Ontario. Fifty-three American sailors died during the sinking of the Hamilton and Scourge in the early morning hours of Aug. 8, 1813, representing the largest loss of life by the U.S. navy in one engagement during the War of 1812.
