Water and Waste: Life and Death
COMMUNITY

(Nov 4, 2006)
In the mid-1850s, thousands of people died from a mystery disease connected with contaminated drinking water.

The problem was solved with the construction of a waterworks system to supply the city with clean water from the lake.

The waterworks allowed Hamilton to grow and prosper, but as the population increased and industry grew, so did the amount of waste produced.

By the mid-1950s the harbour was so badly polluted it became toxic. New solutions to an old problem were needed.

This exhibition follows the history and science of water supply and waste management from Hamilton's early history to the contemporary renewal of the Public Works system and the social organizations working to restore the harbour.

Take a free tour at the official opening on Nov. 4 from noon to 4 p.m.
