Development of Hamilton Beach Has Been Rapid

Well for some reason, the URL that I provided in my last post doesn't work. So I did a Google surch to try and find the page again. And I found it. The problem is, it's only part of what I had originally read. So somewhere on the site is a link to open the intire article. But I don't know...

Hamilton's Historical Beacon: A Lighthouse Well Worth Saving

I've found a page on the stone that was used to construct the beach lighthouse in 1856. Interestingly, the stone didn't come from the escarpment in Hamilton, but rather from Queenston. "Queenston stone is a strongly crinoidal dolomitic limestone, until recently quarried at Queenston from...

    Canal Era Industrialization

I've found what I think is a good reference site on canals in Upper and Lower Canada. It has a little bit on the Burlington Canal. '66 Upper Canada, Statutes, 1823. "An Act to provide for constructing a navigable canal between Burlington Bay and Lake Ontario" (4 Geo. IV, C. 8); also "An Act to...

    P.E. Young

This page indicates that the P.E. Young crashed into the Grand Trunk Railroad bridge in 1891. "The little scow-schooner P. E. YOUNG arrived on the 4 December to load stone from Hancock'sQuarry for Toronto. She had been built in 1864 at Normandale by Wilcox. The following day there was a heavy...

Scott, the thread 'the History of Bell Cairn School' states, "SCHOOL HISTORY The children of the earliest Beach families attended school at Van Wagner's Beach. After the coming of the radial car in 1896, some families chose to send their children to city schools. However, the area was still...

    The inn that’s never out

Thanks Scott. So 'bathing machines' must be similar to 'bath-houses' which were also on the beach. 1875 - H. L. Bastien announced his intention of erecting a new boathouse, complete with the latest conveniences for the season of 1876. He had also built bath-houses on the Beach for the use of...

    Brant's Pond

Drogo "I'm sure Scott will chime in on this because I don't have dates. I remember they filled in to provide enough land to hold the Skyway (which is pretty well on reclaimed land) and to put the service road on the west side going to the Canal. If I guess how old I was when they built the...

    From Outlet to Canal

Scott "I am not an expert on the piers were built, but by judging from old photos and post cards I would say that there were many different methods of construction. Some were built very well with some pride and craftsmanship and others looked like that they just did the best they could. Also I...

Development of Hamilton Beach Has Been Rapid

Scott, "The Beach Road of today use to be part of Beach Blvd that we have today, Beach Blvd at that time was named Beach Road." Scott, does Beach BLVD run north and south along the length of the beach. The 1915 news paper article seems to imply it ran east and west.
