E-News Update - A Message from Hamilton's Public Health Department
Sent in by Councillor Collins

One year ago the City of Hamilton introduced a By-law prohibiting smoking in city parks and recreation areas. Since that time a public awareness campaign has informed residents and visitors to the City of Hamilton about this "new" By-law. Public Health Services, in cooperation with various City departments, has been working with sports associations, neighbourhood groups, festivals and events to ensure people are aware that smoking is prohibited within City parks and recreation areas. Individuals that choose to smoke within a city park or recreation area can be charged and fined $250. Public Health Services' Tobacco Enforcement Officers are conducting inspections at parks and recreation areas to educate residents and visitors about the rules at these properties, and issuing tickets if appropriate .

"By prohibiting smoking within City parks and recreation areas the the City of Hamilton is showing its commitment to protecting the health and safety of children, families, individuals and groups who come to participate in physical and leisure activities at City parks and recreation areas. Additionally, prohibiting smoking in these spaces supports positive role modeling for children and youth, and support s smokers who want to quit " says Dr. Ninh Tran, Associate Medical Office of Health for the City of Hamilton. "For people who are interested in quitting smoking , the City of Hamilton Public Health Services provides support services including counselling and access to smoking cessation products to help in their efforts to quit ."

City of Hamilton By-law No. 11-080 came into effect this past May 31 and prohibits smoking within parks and playgrounds, sports and playing fields, recreation centre property, arenas and stadium property, outdoor pools, leash-free dog parks, beaches, and skateboard parks. All Festivals and Events that are held within City parks or recreation properties and sports organizations that use City fields and facilities will be expecting players and spectators to abide by the by-law.

More information about City of Hamilton By-law #11-080 or about quitting smoking visit www.hamilton.ca/tobacco or contact the City of Hamilton Tobacco Hotline at (905) 540-5566.

not to be contraversional but I am for the bylaw I cant stand having to go thru the plume of smoke at places but they wont police it as they don't the distance from doors of all buildings.

Quiting smoking was the hardest thing I ever did so I have been on both sides and keeping away from the habit is hard even after 15 years

I was at Gage Park last summer and there were warnings given out during baseball games. But now there are certain parts just outside the park that have huge amounts of thrown away cigarette butts on the ground. The City should put some collection trays in those spots.
And I don't think there will be any warnings this year.

Survey - City of Hamilton Smoke-Free Parks and Recreation Areas

On May 31, 2012 the City of Hamilton passed a new by-law that prohibits smoking within city parks and recreation areas. The by-law has now been place for one year, so we are conducting a survey/study to understand awareness and support for the by-law.
We would like to get feedback from all of our Neighbourhood Associations and Community Councils. The information you provide will be used to develop our communication and enforcement plans for the upcoming year. As important members of our community and users of city parks and recreational areas, we value your input.
There are no known risks expected from taking part in this survey. You can stop at any time. Questions will focus on awareness and views about the by-law. To learn more about the survey, please read the accompanying letter of information. This study has been reviewed through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Committee.
We ask that the survey be answered by someone who can represent the organization. Hamilton Public Health Services is collaborating with Propel researchers from the University of Waterloo. The researchers will be helping analyze the data collected and prepare a report. The results will be shared with the City of Hamilton Board of Health/City Council; however all contact information will be removed from survey responses and individual responses will not be shared. Please note that you can exit the survey at any time.
The survey should take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
The deadline for completing the survey is July 25, 2013.
Here is the link to the online survey: http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/cw-tcan/smoke-free-parks-rec-neighbourhood-assoc/
