August 19, 1942 raid remains bloodiest day in city's history
THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR
Hamiltonians will gather on the beach strip tomorrow morning to remember the bloodiest day in the city's history.

Thursday marks the 68th anniversary of the Second World War raid on Dieppe, France which left 197 members of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry dead and hundreds more wounded and captured by the Nazis. In total, 200 Hamiltonians lost their lives in the raid.

Royal Hamilton Light Infantry veterans and serving members of the militia unit will gather at 10:30 a.m. at Dieppe Veterans Memorial Park on Beach Boulevard for a commemoration ceremony.

The raid was the most costly single engagement of the war for Canada. Of the more than 6,000 mostly Canadian soldiers — supported by British, French, and American elements — 907 in total were killed
