A late-morning explosion yesterday at an east Hamilton truck garage sent five people to hospital, two with severe burns.
The blast was so powerful it tore apart the LeClair Truck Repair, at 500 Eastport Boulevard, blowing out one end of the building and buckling truck bay doors at the other. It sent debris flying for hundreds of metres.
Eighteen people were in the building at the time of the explosion. Emergency officials say a tanker truck that had been brought into the shop for repairs that morning exploded.
"Two people received second and third degree burns," said Hamilton fire department spokesman Bob Simpson. Two others received minor burns, and another employee went to hospital with a broken ankle.
The blast rocked nearby buildings "There was a big bang, a flash, and all the windows shook," said Rob Mulder, of American Water. "We're 500 metres away and it blew out one of our windows."
