Fire at asphalt plant causes $300,000 loss
Fire damage at a new asphalt plant on the Beach Strip could top $300,000.

"That's a ballpark figure a manager gave me because of the special equipment they have," District Fire Chief Paul Marson says.

"It could be higher."

Fire struck the new Bitumar Inc. plant on Eastport Drive shortly after 10 p.m. Monday.

The blaze was caused from hot oil seeping from an afterburner unit, which is used to keep asphalt liquid in a large attached unit.

Marson said staff at Bitumar shut off lines feeding oil into the afterburner unit, but the fire still produced heavy smoke.

"We had 30- to 40-foot high flames," he said. "The whole structure was involved. We don't get industrial fires like that everyday."

Despite the scene, firefighters had the blaze quickly under control. They used foam to extinguish it and were on the scene for about 45 minutes.

There were no injuries.

Montreal-based Bitumar opened its $10-million plant on Eastport last year. It converts shiploads of liquid asphalt into various grades of roofing and paving asphalt.
