Thanks to a generous donation by Hamilton resident Frank Charles Miller, a new wooden patio, a beach volleyball court and a combined basketball/ball hockey court are now available for the public to enjoy near the Lakeland Centre and Pool.
Mr. Miller is already well-known in Hamilton for his generous donation of $2 million to the St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation in 2005 for training and educating residency students at St. Joseph’s.

In recognition of his donation, St. Joseph’s named The Frank Charles Miller Academic Centre, and The Frank Charles Miller Amphitheatre in his honour. Mr. Miller donated a further $1 million earlier this year to St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton. That donation has gone to help fund research, education and equipment at the corporation’s new 300-bed hospital for the mentally ill.

Mr. Miller is a life-long Hamilton resident. He started his career at Westinghouse, but decided to retire at age 32 and go into business.

He opened Hamilton’s first laundromat, Mr. King Koin, at the corner of John and Augusta streets. He grew the business to four locations.

Since retiring from this venture in the late 1970s, Mr Miller has enjoyed world travel, gardening and his church community.

These facilities around Lakeland Centre were envisioned in the Confederation Park master plan but were not affordable in HCA’s Confederation Park budget. Mr. Miller learned this through conversations with Lakeland Bistro operator Miroslav Marjanovic and generously donated about $38,000 toward construction of a timber patio, beach volleyball court and asphalt basketball/ball hockey court.
