Dundas now has a one-in-five chance of becoming this year's Kraft Hockeyville.

If the venerable JL Grightmire Market Street Arena goes on to take the Hockeyville title, the 60-year-old arena will receive $100,000 for upgrades, a pre-season NHL game and all sorts of exposure on national television.

"This is great news," said Barry Forth, co-chairperson of the well-organized Dundas campaign to win the contest.

Just cracking the final five is good news for the old stadium that was originally opened as a memorial to the Second World War. Each of the four runners-up will receive $25,000 for upgrades.

Dundas is up against Bishop's Falls, in Newfoundland and Labrador, Stanstead Quebec, West Cranbrook, B.C., and Lawrencetown Nova Scotia.

The winner will be decided by online voting, and Forth has thrown things into high gear.

"Voting closes on Wednesday night at midnight, so everybody needs to vote online as many times as they can," he said.

"Anyone can vote as many times as they like online or toll free, and it only takes about 10 to 15 seconds on the computer.

"So if you happen to have a spare 30 or 40 minutes, you can really wrangle up a lot of votes."

Forth and other organizers have set up a bank of computers at Dundas Town Hall where people can vote. The winner will be announced April 3.

The arena will host a number of special festivities beginning Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, including a visit from a couple of NHL alumni, Forth said.

There will be free public skating and other events, he said.

Grightmire was built in 1949, in part as a war memorial. It was officially opened in 1950 by Barbara Ann Scott, the first Canadian to win an Olympic gold medal in figure skating.

Today, Grightmire hosts minor hockey, junior hockey, senior AAA, and women's hockey leagues.

Representatives from Kraft and Hockey Night In Canada will report live April 3 from each of the Top 5 communities, and announce the winner.
