Lake side path on canal bridge

Several months ago Burlington MP Mike Wallace convened a roundtable on option to improve safety at the canal liftbrdige. The consensus decision was that a new lakeside path on the bridge was the best option.

Cycling committees in Burlington & Hamilton as well as the 2 city councils are passing motions endorsing the new lakeside path. Letters to Mike Wallace will follow.

If the Hamilton Beach Community feels that a new lakeside path linking the waterfront trail between Hamilton & Burlington is a good idea, I suggest they email Mike Wallace endorsing this option.

Public Works Government Services Canada, the owner of the liftbridge will be undertaking a bridge rehabilitation in 2012. If the path is not added at that time, it will probably never be added.

Mike can be reached at: wallam1@parl.gc.ca

See the attached ppt for details.

Hi Gene;
The paint project is underway and will be done this winter (2011). What is planned for 2012 that could include a walkway?

Hi Scotto.

At the roundtable, the bureaucrat from PWGSC stated that the mechanical & electrical components of the lift bridge will have to be rehabilitated. This is scheduled for 2012 pending funding approval. No $ figure was given but earlier articles from the Spec suggested it would be over $10M.

PWGSC does not want to spend any more $ on the bridge. They'd rather sell it. Our hope is to convince the Minister to undertake the bridge rehabilitation & new lake side path at the same time.
