Subject: SUMMER STUDENT HIRING 2007

The Summer Student hiring period is approaching once again for the 2007 season. Process improvements and enhancements have been made from previous years which have proven very effective. These changes included altering the application period from November to January, and convening a single orientation session for all students hired.

What’s New for the 2007 Summer Hiring Season?

All summer applications will be submitted to Human Resources to be logged and categorized by summer positions. As departments begin their summer hiring, applications will be forwarded to the department lead.

City departments will conduct their own screening and interviewing and inform Human Resources which students have been offered summer employment. Names will be cross referenced with the original application to ensure fair and equitable hiring practices and adherence to city employment policies.

There will once again be a mandatory corporate orientation session for summer hires which will provide required information on health and safety, respectful and supportive workplace policies and required conduct, position specific responsibilities, payroll documentation, etc.

Tentative dates have been set and are as follows:
• Orientation for general labourer and office administrative summer positions: Tentatively scheduled for April 28th or 29th
• Orientation for culture and recreation positions: Tentatively scheduled for May 8, 2007.

If students do not attend the orientation session for other than valid reasons (e.g. death in the family etc.) they will forfeit their summer position. It is hoped this change will alleviate substantial operational difficulties experienced in prior years (e.g. locating students, providing follow up orientations, producing manual paycheques).

Frequently Asked Questions

If citizens approach you to inquire about summer job opportunities with the City of Hamilton, the following provides information that may be helpful to you when responding to inquiries concerning Summer Student job opportunities.

When is the Application Deadline?

All students seeking summer employment must apply to the Human Resources Department commencing November 27, 2006 and submit no later than January 26, 2007. Summer positions will be advertised in the Hamilton Spectator, the City of Hamilton Website and the Municipal Service Centres.

Applications will not be mailed out and students are required to apply by the deadline. Late applications will only be considered if we cannot meet our staffing needs from within the group that applied prior to the deadline.

Students who were employed during the previous summer and received a favourable performance appraisal are given preference for rehire prior to new student hiring. All students must present valid student identification or produce a letter from their school confirming enrolment, and attest to the fact that they will be returning to school in the Fall.

Application Locations:

Applications will be available for pick-up and submission at all area Municipal Service Centres and at the Human Resources Department, Standard Life Centre, 120 King Street West, 9th floor. The ad copy will also appear on our Website:
