19. Support Bill to Protect Canada's Lighthouses
Phillip Pacey, President Nova Scotia Heritage Trust

On March 27, the House of Commons is scheduled to give second reading
for Bill S-220, An Act to Protect Heritage Lighthouses. This is a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get some protection for these
buildings.

The Bill was initiated by the late Sen. Michael Forrestall. It is
supported by the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society and by
Heritage Canada. It was championed in the Senate by Sen. Pat Carney and
was passed by the Senate in December. It was given first reading in the
Commons on motion by Gerald Keddy, MP for South Shore-St. Margarets. A
similar bill had been presented earlier in the Commons by Peter Stoffer,
MP for Sackville-Eastern Shore.

This is the time to indicate clearly to the politicians that there is
public support for protecting our heritage lighthouses. Nova Scotia's
oldest wooden lighthouse, the Seal Island Light, dating from 1831, was
placed on Heritage Canada's list of most endangered places on Heritage
Day. Canada is the only G-8 nation that does not have legislation to
protect its lighthouses.

The Bill is at
