In partnership with the Nikola Tesla Educational Corporation, we are thrilled to be hosting the third annual Tesla Electric Festival. This local event is part of a global movement celebrating the incredible technological achievements of Nikola Tesla. The festival is an all-ages gathering of commercial exhibitors, tech enthusiasts, hobbyists, science clubs, artists and students. This year’s festival is also a celebration of a key historical event that changed the course of history in Hamilton: the 120th anniversary of the first hydro-electric power transmission to the City from Decew Falls in Thorold - making it the first electric city in Canada.
This is a free event. Free admission to the museum.
The event will feature:

• demonstrations of products from across the spectrum of Tesla’s innovations with electricity and tech exhibitors
• musical entertainment and fun for the whole family
• a self-guided museum experience
• model engineering marvels and the popular miniature steam train rides, presented by the Hamilton Model Engineering Club and the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers
• food trucks and vendors will also be on site

5 reasons why Hamilton is renaming part of Burlington St. after Nikola Tesla
The decision to rename part of Hamilton's famed Burlington Street East, (the part running from Ottawa Street East to the QEW, in both directions,) to "Nikola Tesla Boulevard" after the Serbian scientist, inventor and pioneer in electricity, has some people scratching their heads.
Why here? What's the connection to Hamilton?
Here are five facts that may clarify things:
1. Hamilton was first city in Canada to receive AC electricity, and became known as "The Electric City"
Decew Falls Generation Station Number 1 in Niagara, built in 1898, is the oldest continuously running hydroelectric power generating station in the country. It was built by Hamilton's "Five Johns," (Dickenson, Gibson, Moodie, Patterson, and Sutherland).
This proved to be an important development for the city. Thanks to the uniqueness of its widespread access to hydroelectric power through Decew Falls, Hamilton branded itself "The Electric City." It marketed itself as a place with affordable power.

Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 to Serbian parents. Tesla's interest in electrical inventions was spurred by his mother, Djuka Mandic, who invented small household appliances in her spare time while her son was growing up. Tesla's father, Milutin Tesla, was a 5th generation Serbian Orthodox priest and a writer, and he pushed for his son to join the priesthood. But Nikola's interests lay squarely in the sciences. At age 28, Tesla decided to leave Europe for America.


Tesla arrives in America


In 1884 Tesla arrived the United States with little more than the clothes on his back and a letter of introduction to business mogul Thomas Edison, whose Direct Current based electrical works were fast becoming the standard in the country. Edison hired Tesla, and the two men were soon working tirelessly alongside each other, making improvements to Edison's inventions. However, several months later, the two parted ways due to a conflicting business-scientific relationship, attributed by historians to their incredibly different personalities and thoughts about the transmission of energy - Tesla believed that AC - Alternating Current electricity was the future. After parting ways with Edison, in 1887 he was able to find interest in his new Tesla Electric Company and successfully filed several patents for his AC-based inventions.


Tesla's AC system eventually caught the attention of American engineer and business man George Westinghouse, who was seeking a solution to supplying the nation with long-distance power. In 1895, Tesla designed what was among the first AC hydroelectric power plants in the United States, at Niagara Rails. The following year, it was used to power the city of Buffalo, New York, a feat that was highly publicized throughout the world. With its repeat successes and favourable press, the alternating-current system would quickly become the preeminent power system of the 20th century, and it has remained the worldwide standard ever since.
In addition to his AC system, Tesla patented over 300 inventions and methods for the creation of a number of other important discoveries including radio and the induction motor used in the Tesla car. His most well known invention is the Tesla coil that is used in medical devices, X-ray machines, transformers and radar. He was the first person to create a remote control wireless robot. He envisioned a world where everyone would own a wireless personal communication device - we call it the cell phone...
With the success of the Tesla automobile, interest in the Tesla - the inventor has recently become a hot topic on the Internet. His former laboratories that laid in ruins are now being turned into museums courtesy of public crowdfunding. A cult classic film The Secret of Nikola Tesla, which stars Or-son Welles as J. P. Morgan is now a hot item. Feature Hollywood films such as The Prestige, stars David Bowie in the role of Tesla and Disney brings Nikola Tesla's Dream of wireless power transmission to reality by constructing a room that powers devices wirelessly,
