Van Wagner's Beach Road and the parking lot of Hutch's restaurant were showered with scrap metal after a truck hit the wall of the Burlington Street exit ramp off the QEW.
Police say the driver of the truck had been Toronto-bound on the QEW Saturday and was driving too fast on the exit ramp, causing him to lose control and strike the abutment.
The load of scrap shifted to the right side of the truck, ripping through the roof of the trailer and spilling over the side.
Tom Hall, a Burlington resident returning from a deer hunting trip with his son, saw a plume of dust and shards of sharp, new-looking metal dropping over the ramp – and a man lying off to the side.
At first he thought it was the truck driver thrown from the cab over the ramp, but realized it was a man who had been riding a motorcycle.
That other man had been driving below on Van Wagner's when he noticed the raining metal and abandoned his bike to flee.
"I stopped and ran to see if the guy on the bike was all right," said Hall. "He was a big guy, maybe six-(foot)-four, he was lying on the side and said he was OK, although he must have been hit a bit, there was debris all over."
An officer with Ontario Provincial Police Burlington detachment said there were no injuries but the Burlington Street ramp, and Van Wagner's, were closed for more than six hours.
The truck driver has been charged with careless driving.
Drugs or alcohol are not considered factors in the crash, police said.
