Hey, we are dealing with the CONC. here and they are saying they will run a $840,000. defecit each year for the next 10 years. They told me that they were not in the community centre business. I have to get over and talk to Jim, he is such a busy man.

Councillor Chad Collins Report

OCTOBER 2005
BEACH COMMUNITY EDITION
LAKELAND POOL & LIGHTHOUSE
We continue to make progress with the new Lakeland Pool and Lighthouse Development. The $2.1 Million facility should be substantially complete by the end of November. The three storey lighthouse will serve as a meeting place for community groups, provide change room facilities for pool users, as well as concession services to park and pool patrons. Nestled beside the lighthouse and new Lakeland Pool is a playstructure and splash pad. Plans are already underway to add a second phase to the development.

Another hurdle has pasted in the completion of Community Centre, the old building has now been completely demolished and removed, the new building is weather sealed with most of the windows and doors installed, the heat is now on. The pool is getting some finishing touches and the stairs are being readied to be installed in the lighthouse section. Also the brickwork on the exterior is close to being finished. Looks like no swimming until next summer, too cold now.

Crews are now working on the landscaping and the parking lots, the main doorway sidewalk was poured last week and there is limited access to the "cupola" as the stairwell has been welded in place. The sub-floor was being installed in the main meeting room and it shouldn't be too long before the building is ready for the general public. From up on top of the lighthouse section it is a very nice veiw of the Beach, the Trail and south to Confederation Park. Looking good. :tbu:

Lakeland facility to open this month.

By KEVIN WERNER

Hamilton Mountain News
December 2,2005
Hamilton's beach residents will be getting an early Christmas present from the Hamilton Waterfront Trust when the Lakeland Community Center opens this month.
The $2.3 million facility, which initially broke ground a year ago, will offer residents an outdoor heated pool that is 1.8 meters deep; a nautical-themed splash pad and waiting area for adults that will be free to residents; public washrooms; showers and change rooms; a second-floor community room, with an impressive view of Lake Ontario, which on a clear day you can see Toronto and can accommodate about 150 people; an area for refreshments; and a distinctive 30-foot viewing tower. There will be about 300 parking spaces surrounding the facility located on 7 acres of land off Van Wagner's Beach Road, along the popular Hamilton Beach Trail, to accommodate large groups of people and visitors to the facility.
At night, said Hamilton councillor Chad Collions, the idea will be to install ground spot lights that will bath the facility, especially the tower, in a white glow that will be seen for miles turning it into a community night light.
The initial design for the centre proposed to relocate the beachfront lighthouse to the former Lakeland Community site. But after investigating the cost, Waterfront Trust officials decided it wasn't worth the work nor the expense.
It is the tower that has drawn a lot of attention from the public either from the nearby Queen Elizabeth Way or from residents in the Beach community as construction nears the end.
The building is constructed with a beige white cedar exterior and a stone facade that is called 'Old Mill', creating an interesting contrast, said Project Manager Eric Hess.
The facility's design, such as the sunburst windows, are similar to other Hamilton Waterfront Trust buildings that have been constructed along the waterfront, said Mr. Hess. Trust officials wanted to make sure the buildings are distinctive, providing a consistent design along the waterfront for visitors, he said.
The facility is accessible for the physically challenged, which includes an indoor elevator, he said.
The long-awaited facility has had it share of delays and construction obstacles, said Mr. Hess

Lakeland Centre & Lakeview Hall

WoooHooo, except for some landscaping and paving, the new facility on Van Wagner's is ready to go. Rentals with a very nice view of the Lake and the Beach are listed below.
I have been told that there are still plans to build an outdoor skating rink for the winter, complete with artificial ice. The pool and slash pad should be open very soon.

Lakeland Centre officially opens
Stoney Creek News
(Jun 30, 2006)
Last Thursday, Hamilton Conservation Authority, peers and federal, provincial and municipal partners celebrated the completion of Lakeland Centre - one of five new waterfront projects in the Hamilton area. Pictured here, councillor Chad Collins (left) and Waterfront Regeneration Trust program director Marlaine Koehler officially open the centre so that waiting Lake Avenue School students can enjoy the very first public swim at the centre's pool.
